Sarah Nettleton designs homes and commercial projects with a deeper understanding that our built surrounds are a platform for living as both individuals and a global community. In writing The Simple Home with design journalist and historian, Frank Edgerton Martin, she weaves spiritual and ecological values into the conversation about what “simplicity” means for each reader.
Among her acclaimed work is the Tofte Cabin, a 1947 cabin on the North Shore of Lake Superior that Nettleton remodeled to be sustainable and to connect to its natural surrounds. In 2002, the National Committee on the Environment for the American Institute of Architects awarded Sarah Nettleton Architects a Top Ten Green Projects Award for the Tofte cabin remodel. Frank Edgerton Martin is one of the few landscape historians who works in large-scale planning and preservation projects while also reporting on new ideas through design journalism nationally and internationally. Working with noted architect Sarah Nettleton, Frank’s writing in The Simple Home reflects his long-term experience in master planning and historic landscape preservation for campuses, arboreta and other sites ranging from Upstate New York to Wisconsin and California. Martin and Nettleton crafted The Simple Home to bring unique environmental and historic insights to the featured houses and the journeys their owners took to build them.
In 2001, Frank edited the book: Valued Places, Landscape Architecture in Minnesota, a survey of historic designed and cultural landscapes around the state—including the University of Minnesota, Morris. Mr. Martin also serves as a contributing editor for Landscape Architecture magazine for which he has written nearly fifty articles concerning landscape history, urban design, corporate campus planning, and historic campus preservation. His writing has also appeared in Architecture, Perspecta, Modulus, Fabric Architecture, Design Book Review, Design Quarterly, and Architecture Minnesota.
Martin holds an MSLA in Cultural Landscape Preservation and History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Department of Landscape Architecture and a degree in Philosophy from Vassar College.
